Located in Sarasota County, North Port was incorporated in 1959 and has become one of the fastest growing cities in Florida, more than tripling in population since the year 2000. It has grown into a vibrant suburb of nearby Port Charlotte and offers access to Gasparilla Sound and Charlotte Bay via the Myakka River.
History & Culture
Much of the history of North Port is built around its history with Port Charlotte to the South. North Port was originally established as North Port Charlotte in 1959 and renamed North Port in 1974. It is the home to the Little Salt Spring, an archeological and paleontological site that is part of the National Register of Historic Places. This sinkhole extends more than 200 feet down and it is a center for research owned by the University of Miami.
Interstate 75 bisects the city of North Port and has two exits that serve the city. This offers highway access to Tampa to the north and Miami to the Southeast. The highway also offers access to Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to the north and Fort Myers International Airport to the Southeast. Nearby Port Charlotte also has an Amtrak station for train travel.
